The website was nicely built on a WordPress which was a really great news for us. The bad surprise was that the theme which was used was very heavy, included a lot of broken code and the design of the theme was all-around bad. The user-experience of the website was unfortunately a bad one. No speed optimization, not much of a title optimization, WordPress installation full of unused plugins. The website had some keywords on the third and even one on the second page of Google.

Work done -

We started with getting the website a new theme which we customized for the specific needs. We gave the whole website a facelift, changed the imagery and tweaked the design elements here and there. Next step was to optimize the speed a bit, we gave this a little less attention but made sure that basics would be in place. Finally we performed a keyword research and optimized the pages and included some additional SEO tweaks.

On-going work -

We are creating landing pages for additional keywords. On-going minor white-hat link building mainly from Web 2.0 blogs and other high authority websites.

Not like us in the seoFriik, instead of spending time at the beach we’re doing experiments with SEO. So whats cooking? We decided to give a closer look at the notorious wiki links. As you may already know, those links have been very popular in the SEO community for nearly a year now. Especially in the Blackhat Market section, those links are now being part of most of the link building packages. With the demand, a lot of software has been coded for this specific purpose, software which allows you to submit to thousands of Wiki directories within hours. Unfortunately, most of the content which is published there is auto-spun copy-paste from the Ezine articles and from other relevant article directories. Nevertheless, we decided to see if those links work, how well they work and actually try to see for how long. Hope you’re enjoying the summer and had some time off from your computers. Unfortunately, most of the content which is published there is auto-spun copy-paste from the Ezine articles and from other relevant article directories. Nevertheless, we decided to see if those links work, how well they work and actually try to see for how long. One more interesting factor is that the Wiki links are mostly no-follow, so that will spice it up a bit. As we are thinking of having another case study based on that.

Details of the Wiki links Case study

We took a list of 10000 Wiki directories (pretty massive eh?) PR0-PR7

3 Articles – Content manually spun by writers on the sentence, phrase and word level (readable, decent quality content)

Post to 330 Wiki directories per day for 30 days

Use Linklicious to signal the Google about the links

Software – Clyde’s Wiki Bomber

Website to be ranked – SpeedyWP.com

Registred on 13.07.2012

PageRank n/a

0 backlinks

~10-20 pages on content

On-site optimized

Speed optimized

Measuring Period/Reporting

We will make updates on this post in every 5 days.

Period on rank measuring 45 days

Software – Advanced Web Rankings

——————————————————————————————————————

Start – 17th August – click here to download the ranking report

Report file attached. As you can see, we started from scratch. The weren’t any ranks previously established. Good luck to us!

Report 1 – 22nd August – click here to download the ranking report

So 5 days later, first results are in. It is a bit early to tell if the wiki links actually contributed to the ranks or they are mainly based on the on-site optimization what has been done on the website. Nevertheless, we can safely assume that indexing took place thanks to Wiki links.

Report 2 – 27th August - click here to download the ranking report

Now 5 days have passed. It seems that the first bump has passed and we have a slight decrease, which is quite obvious. Quick growth is often followed by a slowdown. However, now we are soon going to see if the wiki links actually work or not.

Report 3 – 1st of September – click here to download the ranking report

This time we see a lot of improvement in the rankings. Looking quite good already. However, when we consider the traffic, there is still nothing really going on on the website yet.

Report 4 – 6th of September - click here to download the ranking report

We are seeing a slow but steady growth for most of the keywords. Some are still jumping up and down to find their place. Now we will make a small change in the tactics and start linking also to subpages.

Report 5 – 11th of September - click here to download the ranking report

Time for the next update. Now we are seeing a slight decrease in the rankings. Perhaps over delivery in links? Perhaps a Google update? Perhaps something else? We’ll check the reports in the coming days too, to get more information on the causes. We are seeing a small drop in some of our other sites as well, so it could very well be an update. It is hardly unlikely that the fluctuation is cause by another Google update, neither we do believe that we built way too many way too fast. I would really like to use term “Google Dance” here and believe that this is a temporary drop, but only thing here is left to wait and see.

Report 6 - Scheduled on 16th of September – click here to download the ranking report

Compared with the previous rank check we see mainly a quite decent incline. From the total of 15 keywords which we are targeting with this campaign, we see that 7 of them have jumped quite a bit and 5 of them had had a slight drop. Those two keywords which are showing off the charts are the fault of the AWR. Even though, the jump has been positive, we are not seeing any visitors from Search Engines. What we also noticed is that the jumps are getting smaller and smaller, so we might be near the platue. We have still couple of rounds to go to wrap up this case study and we would like to believe that we end up in top 10 with at least 5 keywords.

Report 7 – Scheduled on 21th of September – click here to download the ranking report

When we saw the previous report coming in, I was honestly assuming that we ran out of juice and from this point onward we will be seeing either few minor increases or a smooth downfall. As we see from this report, I was wrong, a nice jump for Report 7. That means that the previous keywords which dropped were dancing a little bit but improved their positions. My plan of landing at least 4-5 keywords on top1 is yet achievable. Which I’m curious about is that the some of the keyword haven’t yet had the jumped not even to top 50 – wordpress speed optimization, speed up wordpress, speed up wordpress. Now we’re going to add a twist to the case study, I’ll include 500 words of content to the first page and SEO it a little bit. Perhaps, get some content for the subpages as well. This might be needed to get the other keywords rocking as well.

Report 8 – Scheduled on 26th of September - click here to download the ranking report

This rank check comes with some unpleasant surprises. We are seeing many drops, fortunately very minor. This leads me to believe that those rank drops are a small scale Google dance. Nevertheless we were expecting a lot more from this one. We decided to extend the case study a while longer because this project hasn’t yet reached its full potential and we’re seeing it can rank much higher that it is right now.

Report 9 – Scheduled on 1st of October - click here to download the ranking report

Wowii, seems like we had a big kick this week. Now, we’re fairly confident that this bump didn’t come from the wiki links, but rather the content which we added to the front. It was in that sense a very tiny tweak to the on-site optimization but ranks improved significantly. We can conclude from this event that with a good on-site and just linking from wikis you can get quite a good bump.

Report 10 – Scheduled on 7nth of October - click here to download the ranking report

Seems like our growth somewhat continues and we see some dancing. “Fast WordPress” wins the best dance award this week. There are tiny drops on some of the keywords but we also see significant jumps. Indication that the game is far from over and wiki links are bringing it. For next week I’m going to order an additional article and start from very beginning with fresh stuff, increasing the velocity a little.

Report 10 – Scheduled on 14nth of October - click here to download the ranking report

Codename: Downfall. That unfortunately folks look very bad. A bit too much to be a Google dance, a bit less to be a penalty. My thoery is that we’ve reached the end of the line with effectivness of the Wiki links. My obvious problem is also now the diversity. I’ve been through the list already so having a second run with the same urls. I burn it through the list and give it few more weeks, but I guess its better to start wrapping up this study and call it a day with wiki links.

Report 11 – Scheduled on 20th of October - click here to download the ranking report

Codename: Resurrection. Wow, seems like the game is still on. We had some come backs, some rises and few keywords entered into Google dance. Does that mean that the top of these links power haven’t yet been met? I’d really interested to know where is the limit. That’s the second time when it seems that now its only direction is down from this point but I’ve been wrong two times. We’ll keep it up and I’m not going to jump to conclusions when the next drop will happen.

Report 12 – Scheduled on 20th of October - click here to download the ranking report

Compared with the last update we have mostly drops. As it seems this is becoming normal, one week you will get a boost and the other week you will drop slightly. The interesting two are the main keywords “wp speed optimization” and “fast wp” which are Google dancing heavily all the time, while the others are very stable. Both of the keywords have been ranking in Top 20. Best for “fast wp” was 19 and best for “wp speed optmization” was 11. I’m really hoping that the fast wp will come around since it has the most traffic.

Stay tuned!

You build a massive number of backlinks towards your website, it seems to be working really well getting a jump on all of the keywords targeted, however, after a while you see a drop. All those keywords which you worked on are dropping like rocks. Frustrating isn’t it? Why does that happen? What are main reasons? What can you do to avoid it?

We will need to start with few of the basics – Link Velocity and Link Diversity.

As you may already know, Google ranks the websites according to their popularity. It used to be just links, nowadays it is also about social signals and on-site signals. So when an article becomes popular on the web, there will be a lot of linking happening, a lot of sharing, a lot of buzz around the topic. All of these are signals for Google to push up the article in its index since it is becoming important for the people. Great examples are various blog posts, news items etc. Obviously these are links from so many various places, from so many different domains and most likely to be increasing. All of those blog posts and articles are getting natural link diversity and link velocity.

Link Diversity – the uniqueness of the links. Domains they are coming from, PageRank, do-follow and no follow, social or no social, anchored or none anchored, contextual or none-contextual.
Link Velocity – the increase of incoming links. How the incoming link numbers are increasing. The more popular something is becoming, the faster it is increasing.

When we are link building, we are trying to mimic this effect. We want to show that our website is becoming popular, that it is awesome, that is dope. In most cases we use a lot of automation to scale up our Social links etc. Everything seems to work out great in the beginning but what most of the SEOs fail to see is that their behavior is very unnatural and detectable. Most likely they build way too many links in a short time frame, they build similar type of links and stop working on them immediately after that.

How does this look to Google?

We can safely assume that they are able to track and monitor what is happening so – A bunch of same type of links appear suddenly, linking directly to the domain, coming from the same places, within an hour or two there is a thousand and just after that there is 0. Google will find that there is a spike going on and bump your rank and throw you up in the SERPs. Now, few weeks go by and Google is doing a recrawl and sees that there haven’t been any new links coming in, the links are still the same type and the website is on stand-by. Obviously the corrections need to be made and website will start dropping. You can blast and blast again, get few bumps again, but in the end you will still fall.

What can you do to avoid the drops?

Link to various pages on your website, not only to the domain.

Use different type of link anchors and sometimes don’t use anchor at all.

Link from as many various domains as possible and make sure that they are not spammy.

Get both Do-Follow and No-Follow links.

Try to build links which won’t get deleted or vanish over time.

Try to start slowly with higher quality backlinks, then you slowly start scaling on lower authority.

Avoid from using spun content which has been spun to be totally unreadable.

Never stop building! You can go slow, but always keep at it. Consistency is the key.

Avoid linking from low quality websites and bad neighborhoods.

Indexing the links is not a good idea, let Google find them naturally.

Update your content. Building links to a website which is not coming up with anything new might not be a good idea.

What are great places to start?

Social Bookmarking (Onlywire)

Web 2.0 (WordPress, Blogger etc.)

Guest Blogging (in relevant niche)

Yahoo and Dmoz directory

Some good articles directories (like Ezine)

Keep an eye on the blog. In the following articles we will
recommend some really nice link building tricks which Google likes and are 100% white-hat.

How can custom reporting be useful for you?

Today, I was consulting a client (small business) who was interested in some very specific data from Google Analytics. They required help with setting up a proper Custom Reporting to see details which are relevant to their goals. They are definitely on the right track, as measuring is the most important part of your marketing efforts. Still, with all of these factors taken into account, it is extremely difficult to really know what is influencing a sales. Having said that, Goals and Custom Reports in Google Analytics can give you very useful insights into the two things that your visitors care about:

Sales

Things That Lead to Sales

Sales are the macro conversions— this is where we want to get to, while “Things That Lead to Sales” are the micro conversions—the actions taken to get there. These micro conversions are something which don’t have a direct hit on our finance, however they give us a clue of the actions which were needed to get that juicy sale.

Break down of “Things that lead to sales”

Acquisition: How did visitors get to your site (search, referral, direct), how many visitors came from each source; did they bounce?

Activation: What are your visitors’ on-site behaviors: number of pages viewed? Repeat visits? Do they sign up (newsletter, email, membership, subscription)?

Retention: Do you capture their attention (email opens, CTR)? Does your content interest them (returning visits)?

Referral: Do your visitors love you so much they tell other people about you? Blog and other media mentions, retweets, +1s, likes etc.? AND, do they tell other people who then also sign up, like, follow, refer, buy, etc.?

Break down of “Sales”

Revenue: Do they buy from you?

Setting up goals in Google Analytics provides an easy way to track sales, especially if you are using Goal Funnels.

What’s a Goal Funnel?

A funnel represents the path that you expect visitors to take on their way to converting to a sale. It’s a defined set of steps or pages in the checkout process. The most common funnel example is from E-commerce websites, where a visitor adds a product to his/her shopping cart, presses “Proceed to Checkout”, fills in the required information and gets directed to payment processor. Each and every page in that example is a step in the funnel. A Goal Funnel shows the funnel conversion rate, as well as the pages along the path where a visitor abandons the task. Not only are funnels important for shopping sites, they can also be implemented to simple quote request, contact form, e-mail subscription. Goals and Goal Funnels will tell you the conversion rate for the macro goal so you can do some forecasting and they will help you understand what steps are problematic for the visitor.

Once you have Goals and Goal Funnels set up in Google Analytics, it is time to proceed with Custom Reports which will give you even more information about those micro conversions “things that lead to a sale” like website visitors, time on site, number of pageviews, sign ups, click throughs, repeat visits and referrals.

How Do You Set Up a Custom Report in Google Analytics

Check out some of the ready made, easy to install Google Analytics Custom Reports!

Step 1 – Log into your Google Analytics account

Step 2 – In the top navigation, find the tab called Custom Reporting, open it

Step 3 – Click New Custom Report

Step 4 – Label your report and name the report tab

Step 5 – Add the Metrix box

Click on the blue Add Metric box to add your KPIs (key performance indicators) and select the relevant fields from the dropdown menu. These metrics will make up the columns of your grid.

Step 6 – Add Dimension box

Click on the green Add Dimension box to create a hierarchy or drilldown structure. For example, if you are running a banner ad campaign, you may want the top-level reporting to show that the source/medium is referral traffic from the National Post, but if you have more than 1 banner image/copy, then you may want to drilldown to see what ad specifically is sending traffic to the site. Same with Google Adwords campaigns, you may want to see what Campaign, Ad Group and Keywords are performing best.

Step 7 – Save your report

Custom Reporting is an effective tool to understand what is really happening on your website. Where are you getting the best conversions? What keywords are really cost-effective? WHAT WORKS?

Simple break down -

Step 1: Pick Good Goals
Step 2: Set up Goals in Google Analytics
Step 3: Create a Custom Report
Step 4: Experience the Awesome

There are also a lot of discussions in the SEO community if Google uses website speed as a ranking factor. We in seoFriik believe that one of the fundamental parts of a great website is its speed and it should be every webmaster’s goal to give the uttermost to make the their web as fast as possible. Don’t you just hate when something takes forever to load? Yes, we do as well, it is very annoying and frustrating. In this article I will give you hands-on advice how to speed up your WordPress site.

Step 1 – Install W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache

Those are two great plugins which can improve your website performance beyond recognition. Easiest way to install them is to click “Plugins -> Add New -> Type in “W3 Total Cache or WP Super Cache”. Click install and that’s already half the job done or you can click the links which are in this subheading and download/upload them directly. WordPress Community claims that WP Super Cache, once configured properly will speed up you website more compared to W3 Total Cache. On the other hand, W3 Total Cache is more straight forward and easier to use. That is up to you to decide, which you prefer, but we would recommend W3 Total Cache, at least in the beginning. It is much easier to use and set up. Once you have installed W3 Total Cache, activate it and go to its settings(Performance – > General Settings). Enable Page Cache, Minify, Database Cache, Object Cache and Browser Cache. Pay a lot of attention to “Minify”, since it can cause some trouble. In the future we will make a post in regards to configuration of WP Super Cache and W3 Total Cache.

Step 2 – Integrate Content Delivery Network (ex. Cloudflare) and channel all the traffic

Most of us don’t have money to spend on fast Akamai or other CDN networks. However, nowadays Content Delivery Networks have been becoming a big part of web hosting and speeding up the web. As for those who are not familiar with the concept of the CDN – imagine your website being hosted on 100 different servers which are located in different places in the world. Once a user hits your website, the CDN network will determine where is the nearest server for this person and loads the data from that server. In other words, your website is copied to various locations in the world, so users could load the data as fast as possible. This is something what a normal user doesn’t see as everything is going down in the background, however he/she might notice that the website is somehow super fast. Again, all this is contributing to user-experience which in turn contributes to SEO. Google will definitely note that you are using CDN and making your website better for your visitors.

Now we would like to recommend you Cloudflare. It is a free CDN solution well suitable for small businesses. It is relatively easy to integrate, you just need to point your website on their IP and wait for few hours for the servers to propagate, they have easy setup guide for this, so it shouldn’t be a problem. Cloudflare also comes with a security, so you can actually sleep better at night knowing that all the malicious traffic is handled by Cloudflare servers. There is a PRO account available which is dirty cheap, if you have a bit to spend, definitely worth to subscribe. Clouldflare totally integrates with W3 Total Cache as well, those two combined is a power house. Lately, there have been many other CDNs popping up, as we are a little outdated with the latest, it definitely doesn’t hurt to browse around a little.

Step 3 – Image removal/optimization/resizing

As we’ve seen from most of our clients, the typical speed issue comes from using heavy images which are not optimized. The problem is that images with higher resolution take awful amount of time to load, so therefore, if you’re displaying an image at 300×200 and you’re getting it from an image with a size of 1024×800, then obviously you can cut back quite a bit. The other part is optimization of the images, e.g. Yahoo Smush It, which does a brilliant job. You also should critical look to see which images you’re not using or which are not really essential for your site. It is incredible how much you can speed up your website by resizing your images. It is a dirty and nasty job, but will pay off.

Step 4 – Measure your website performance with GTmetrix and make the additional changes

GTmetrix is a website speed measuring website. All the Steps which I brought out previously are included also in GTmetrix suggestions. All the suggestions are documented well in GTmetrix help page, definitely check it out. If you feel like you’re not able to make some of those changes, feel free to leave a comment or drop us letter.

A few suggestions when you’re applying the changes

1) Optimizing transparent images (.png) might end up badly as the optimization might change the transparent background into black. If you have a white as a background of your website, just turn the image into .jpg and optimize it then. Otherwise, just keep it as it is, just make sure that the resolution of the image is brought down to minimal.

2) Enabling caching and CDN might cause problems when developing the website. When you’re simultaneously working on the website, switch to development mode in Cloudflare settings and disable the caching, this will save you a lot of confusion and frustration, believe me, “been there, done that”.

3) Don’t over do it, if you see that you’re already destroying your website’s beautiful design, just stop, 80% GTmetrix score is more than enough. It is true, that speed is very important, but you can’t sacrifice your expensive design to squeeze that extra second, it it not just worth it.

Good luck guys!

As many of you already know it is an open source platform intended for bloggers. Recently however, the trend has been going in the direction of using it as a full-blown website content management system. We in seoFriik belong to that very same group of companies/people. We just love it!
In this articles I would like to point out why is WordPress a really fantastic platform and why should you consider it for your website.

Reason number one – SEO friendly

As an SEO company, our main focus is well optimized websites. I guess you might say “No way!” at the moment. But the truth is that in our everyday work we need to optimize websites and make sure that their platforms allow us to make all the necessary changes. WordPress itself, according to Matt Cutts, is around 80% optimized by default. This number is a bit controversial, however, there is a lot of truth in it. WordPress has a lot of good things for SEO installed by default. Just to point out few of the very important – clean permalinks, clean SEO friendly titles, fantastic website structuring, Spider friendly site build-up, indexing and non-indexing features, categories, tags and many more. After applying few additional plugins and giving a them some tweaks you have a SEO monster. Latest Google Algo update unfortunately leveled the ground a little with penalizing over optimized sites, so you might want to bring your SEO efforts down a notch, however, having WordPress + a SEO plugin (ex. Yoast) doesn’t hurt. You really can’t go wrong on SEO with WordPress, unless your designer and developer decide to do something really dumb with the page elements.

Reason number two – Open Source

That’s right! It is completely free, having a massive user base. So how does it exactly help? Having millions of users is like having a millions of developers in your disposal. Website is something that you want to improve all the time, maybe adding it new awesome features, maybe stripping something away, maybe trying to speed things up a bit or maybe just redesign something real quick. Most of the problems you’re facing, have been or are being faced by a lot of other people as well. If you Google for it, you most probably will find an answer to 90% of the problems. Secondly, if you want to add something new to your website, you just need to know what you want and search for that specific plugin. This might be a little trickier since in a lot of cases you actually need to be quite experienced, however I can assure you that basic functionality in WordPress can be achieved with little to no experience. It is seriously a few click install for most of the features. There are massive amounts of tutorials on the web which you can follow step-by-step. This is something I personally love about WordPress, so much resource, so much possibilities. WordPress is also constantly updated, their team is doing a fabulous job!

Reason number three – User-friendly

You might want to argue with me a little here. There a definitely a lot of CMSes around with no-brainer click & install functionality which are so easy to use. I do agree that it might not be one of the easiest CMSes to use, however, easy to use usually is achieved with a hard price. This hard price is paid from flexibility and functionality. WordPress in my honest opinion has achieved something very balanced. It takes a little time to learn all the basic tricks, but once you do, you can do SO MUCH! If you find it a bit difficult to use, my recommendation is that you give it some time to get used to, watch few videos from Youtube if you get stuck, but don’t give up on it. We haven’t had any problems with teaching it to our clients. We here in seoFriik can’t imagine ourselves using anything else.

Reason number four – Design choices

The very famous WordPress templates/themes. I have only one word for the selection – MASSIVE! There are too many, seriously. I sometimes spend a day to find a design for a client, not that the designs are hard to find, there are just so many good ones, so I end up having a lot of hard time making the choice. The free themes on the web won’t offer much in our opinion, most probably you’re able to find good stuff after spending hours and hours browsing between themes, but it might not be worth you time. Instead we recommend you to go to a theme site like Themeforest. So many beautiful themes with great functionality. If you don’t need a custom design, for 30$ you can score a beast theme which will save you a lot of money. In most cases there are demos available of themes, where you can see already established websites with those specific themes. Most of the time, you’re able to customize the colors, so you can easily fit it in with your brand logo/design etc.

In Conclusion

WordPress offers great functionality, SEO and User-friendliness for absolutely free. It is a very flexible platform which gives you a lot of possibilities for further development. The user base reaches into millions of people, there is a massive amount of support resource available on the web and you can find suitable design for your taste. We love WordPress in seoFriik, it is a seriously fantastic platform.

They either go away because they have been dealt with correctly. Or, they may have went away, simply, because people have already lost their interest. But, certain issues stay on people’s minds for a long time because of its possible over-all effect. That is very true with regard to the possibility of using Negative SEO.

Its name itself, Negative SEO may make you think otherwise, of using it. But, you are well aware that this phrase has been buzzing around within the community. As they say, people are afraid of what they do not understand. To appease these irrational fears, it is best to begin by understanding exactly what Negative SEO is.

Having a website, whether for personal or business purposes, is like entering a game. This is the game of who gets to rise on the top ranks of the internet. That is why webmasters utilize whatever tools they have at hand, to be on top of the search engine ranking.

Ranking is what counts, especially for online businesses. This is because it would most likely convert to greater traffic levels and later on increased profits through an increase in sales. But, with the advent of Negative SEO, webmasters no longer just focus on the particular site they are working on. Instead, they look at their competitors and work on that.

With the latest update on the said issue, many people are now worried that they may end up being targeted by their competitors. To present it visually, before Negative SEO came into play, webmasters seek to climb the ranking ladder by properly optimizing their site.

Now, by utilizing Negative SEO, it can be compared to someone cutting down the ladders climbed on by others and in the end, because all their ladders are now shorter, you appear on top. There are certain limits to how a website optimizes their site, and with Negative SEO, the webmaster would do what they can to make their competitors’ sites go over the limit and in time, be reprimanded. The penalty may come in different forms and it may take a certain time period for search engines to recognize that a website is full of poor quality links.

Now, the issue is, if this can truly be applicable. Within the community, there are those that consider this as an unethical practice just to be ahead of the game. But, it cannot be avoided that there are those who think that all is fair in the war of going up the search engine ranking. Its efficiency of getting the desired results is even being questioned.

Forums left and right have talked about this non-stop. And, what can be deduced is that it is possible to use it. Whether it is ethical or not, is still being considered. And, the answer would depend on where the person stands. Its applicability is being acknowledged though there are certain sites that they say cannot be affected by Negative SEO. But, if you think that you may be a good target by your competitors, the question is whether you should resort to the same tactic or just build your ranking by using White Hat SEO and focus on adding high quality links and staying within the limits set by the search engine.
